So this execise in looking for song for Piggy and Tazzy at the Chocolate Starfish has gotten me thinking about music and what part it plays in my life.
As far back as I can remember there was always music in my parents house. Gawd knows I had to listen to more than my share of Marty Robbins growing up LOL. My parents always wanted me and my brothers to have some kind of music talent. My brother S was never interested in anything but sports so he skipped the music lessons and the only way HE was ever carrying a tune was in a bucket LOL. I, on the other hand, was tortured with music lessons. *sigh* The accordian, the organ and the clarinet were the three instruments that I was taught not to play lol. Actually, I remember three songs to play on the organ - When the Saints come marching in, Marianne and Snowbird. I still have the accordian actually and I've found out that it's actually quite valuable now. Who knew? lol God knows I would have gladly given it away when I was taking the lessons. They also encouraged me to sing so sing I did, solos in church, in school musicals and choir. Singing was something my parents could relate to.
Now I don't know about anyone else's family but when my relatives get together they start to sing and gawd help me but they all have their own songs lol. Not songs that they actually wrote or anything but a song that was theirs and the good loord help anyone new who tried to sing their song lol. I'm not sure if this is a purely Scottish thing or not but I've never seen it anywhere else.
Every single party or gathering my parents had, for my whole life, ends up as a singalong. My granddad (on my dad's side) sang Dark Loch na Garr and my grandma (his wife) sang Soor mulk cairt. My mom sings I remember You and my dad sang I'm a fool (no idea what the song's actual title is).
Does your family do this kind of thing? Is it just a Scottish thing?
Btw - MY song is this -
Just a wee deoch an' doris,
Just a wee drap, that's a'.
Just a wee deoch an' doris,
Before we gang awa'.
There's a wee wifey waiting,
And a wee but in vain.
If you can say "It's a braw, bricht,
Moonlicht nicht,"
Well you're a' richt, d'ye ken!
LOL - I'm not stupid - I pick a song that everyone can sing along to! :)

My family doesn't do sing-a-longs. My extended family. My husband has an Irish Curlew song he used to sing to my daughter and another one that's a bloody lullaby. Seriously bloody and quite disturbing.
ah, "when the saints come marching in." we should play it on dueling pianos. i can't imagine playing the accordion -- i am not coordinated enough!

Well that all sounds really familiar - but then, yes, I do have Scottish family! :D
NB: NOBODY should ever learn to play accordian. It is the most hideous instrument ever created!
We didn't have singalongs as such, more like playathons, my parents would dig out their instruments, and THEY would sing while we were suffered to listen, hours on end, but no, no family singalongs, and background is nearly 100% English.
As George Bernard Shaw once said - "The definition of a Gentleman is one who can play the accordion - but doesn't!"
I think the song thing comes from the Scottish Ceilidh tradition (which is slightly different from the Irish one) at which you have a band and everyone gets up and does "their song".
